The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is entering a new era as the eighth Abbott World Marathon Major and the first Major on the African continent. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Table Mountain, the Atlantic coastline, and the vibrant streets of Cape Town, this marathon offers an unforgettable experience for runners from around the world. Beginning in 2027, Cape Town officially joins the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors alongside Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago, and New York City giving runners a new opportunity to earn a Major star and become part of marathon history.
More than just a marathon, Cape Town is a celebration of running, culture, and community. The 42.2 km course showcases some of the city’s most iconic scenery, with views of Table Mountain and the dramatic coastline along the route. The 2026 edition welcomed 27,000 marathon runners from 145 countries, including 8,500 international participants, making it a truly global racing experience. Whether you're chasing a personal best, collecting your next Major star, or simply looking for an incredible destination race, Cape Town is quickly becoming a must-run marathon on the global stage.
